HOW EFFECTIVE IS MALARONE


Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is luckily preventable. This disease is known to affect tropical and subtropical areas. Various countries are prone to having malarial affinity. Also, furthermore, the risk is affected by seasonality, the specific itinerary and other unplanned occurrences. For instance, there are over 10 000 cases of travel-associated malaria recorded annually. Most of these cases occur in travellers that did not adhere to travel vaccinations and other protective protocols put in place by the concerned authorities. 

 Long-term travellers also pose a greater challenge regarding malaria chemoprophylaxis. This is not limited to their longer exposure but is also admixed with other special activities like that pg working outdoors in highly endemic areas where there's a stark difference in the living conditions.

 Drugs that are effective to combat malaria.

 Through multiple types of research, multiple usages it has been concluded that atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) is a highly effective agent when used to combat malaria. It is most commonly used for malaria prophylaxis. Also, it is well-tolerated compared with other antimalarials.

 Atovaquone-proguanil also known as Malarone or Generic Malarone is an attractive agent and can be used for emergency self-treatment when it comes to malarial prophylaxis. Apart from some minor inconvenience like that of occasional gastrointestinal intolerance, treatment doses delivered for Malarone are very well accepted.

The adult dose is as per the following:

     4 tablets/day for 3 days

     It is also safe for children who are above the weight of ten pounds.

     It is to be noted that its safety in pregnancy and during the period of breastfeeding is not much well known.

 Some contraindications:

 AP or Malarone is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment. When the recorded creatinine clearance is less than 30 mL/min. Also, the patients who have had a history of hypersensitivity to any of the drug components are to be driven clear of this drug's use. Also, Malarone should not be used in individuals who have failed AP chemoprophylaxis. It must also be avoided against anyone with evidence of severe or complicated malaria.
