Must Know Tips About Using a Defibrillator

An AED (automated external defibrillator) is the latest smart device that gives the heart a mild electric shock when someone’s heart has stopped due to cardiac arrest. You can use a defibrillator on children over one-year-old and adults. Ambulances have a defibrillator with them on board but using a defibrillator before the arrival of the ambulance can double a patient's chances of survival. So it is up to witnesses quickly to find the nearest defibrillator.

Where can I find a defibrillator?
Many public places keep A defibrillator as part of their first aid equipment, including shopping centres, train stations, airports, offices, and schools. Defibrillators come in a small portable plastic box and are stored in the noticeable green casing with a green sign above. If you do not have a defibrillator at your office or home, then get in touch with reputed defibrillator suppliers to get the best quality AED.

If you don’t have a defibrillator, then you must immediately call 999 or 112 for professional medical help. Meanwhile, do ordinary resuscitation (CPR) until the ambulance and defibrillator arrive.

How do I use a defibrillator?
You can use a defibrillator with no training. The machine analyses someone’s heart rhythm and then uses visual or voice prompts to guide you through each step.

• The first step is to ensure that someone has called for medical assistance, and, if a defibrillator isn’t immediately available, give CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until someone can bring you a defibrillator.

• As soon as you’ve got a defibrillator, switch it on. It will instantly start to give you a series of visual and verbal prompts notifying you of what you should do. Follow these given prompts until the ambulance arrives or someone experiences takes over you.

• Take the pads out of the sealed AED pack. Remove or cut through any clothing and first wipe away any sweat from the chest.

• Remove the lining paper and attach the defibrillator' pads to their chest.

• Place the first pad on the upper right side of the chest, just below their collarbone.

• After this, place the second pad on their left side, just below their armpit. Make sure to right position of the pad length ways, with the long side in line with the length of their body.

• Once you’ve done this, the defibrillator will start checking the heart rhythm. Make sure that no-one is touching the person. Continue to follow the voice and visual prompts that the machine gives you until help arrives.
